The Flaherty Fellowship

The 2025 Fellowship program will run Wednesday June 25 through Sunday June 29.

The Flaherty Fellowship is a vital part of the Flaherty Film Seminar, providing emerging and mid-career filmmakers, media professionals, and community leaders with an immersive space to deepen their engagement with cinema. The program provides Fellows with a unique opportunity to focus on the ethical, artistic, and community-aspects of their practice. In addition to the rigorous program of screenings and facilitated discussions, the immersive nature of the Fellowship program, where participants reside together and engage in shared meals and social gatherings, encourages a deep and active community centered around the exchange of cinematic ideas.

Our Flaherty Fellows program actively engages and mentors emerging voices in the field, with the goal of helping them advance their own practice while forming life-long creative relationships. Flaherty Fellows often return as Guest Artists or Curators, remaining connected to the Flaherty - and each other - over decades.

All Fellowships are offered at no cost to their recipients, thanks to our many Fellowship Partners. Some Fellowship slots are selected via our Open Call; the remaining slots are underwritten by academic institutions who select the Fellowship recipients internally.

Applications for the 2025 Flaherty Fellowship are now closed.

Fellowship Experience

Each Fellowship cohort brings together a diverse group of filmmakers, artists, and thinkers dedicated to collective inquiry and exchange. Fellows are selected through partner organizations and via an open-call application process, ensuring a diversity of perspectives and experiences.

The Fellowship program runs concurrently alongside the Flaherty Seminar while offering additional programming - workshops, screenings, discussions, artist lunches, and artist talks - designed to provide more in-depth engagement with the Seminar program.

Fellows become an integral part of The Flaherty’s rich history and vibrant community; frequently past Fellows have become staff, guest programmers, and/or guest artists.

Since 2021, The Flaherty has also offered an Online Fellowship program, which runs parallel to the in-person Fellowship, broadening access and creating new avenues for connection across geographies.
