Employment Philosophy
The Flaherty has a long-standing commitment to engaging critically with the ethics and aesthetics of nonfiction filmmaking in the widest sense. It creates and nurtures spaces that debate authorship, representation, inclusion, consent, access and accountability. We aim to democratize the seminar space and invite robust discussion amongst a range of people giving particular space to formerly underrepresented communities. The Flaherty is propelled by a desire to upend entrenched norms and unequal power dynamics. We champion new models of nonfiction filmmaking, curating, and theorizing.
In recent years, the Flaherty has made strides to further diversify its programming and audiences, becoming synonymous with transformative curating and sustained community. The Flaherty is committed to inclusiveness, tolerance, openness, change, and progress; to a collective rather than an individualistic sensibility; to integrity and transparency in all of our processes; to welcoming new and diverse participants into the Flaherty experience; and to respect and honor our staff, the old and new members of our organization and the participants of our programs.
The Flaherty believes we are strengthened by the diversity of our staff, and welcomes such diversity including race, gender identity or expression, educational attainment, disability, veteran status, and personal experience with the criminal justice system. We welcome applications from people of all cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, and we strongly encourage people of color and persons with disabilities to apply to job openings. We actively cultivate an institutional culture that reflects the values of respect, equity, and inclusion that we seek through our work to amplify in the larger world.
We hire, promote, and retain employees based on their professional qualifications, demonstrated abilities, and exceptional performance. As a small non-profit, we hold our employees to high standards and seek individuals who exhibit the employee qualities and ambition required to help The Flaherty meet its mission. All personnel decisions, including but not limited to recruitment, hiring, compensation, assignment, training, promotion, discipline, and discharge, are made without discrimination based on any protected characteristic as defined by law (e.g., race, color, religion, national origin, citizenship, ancestry, age, disability, gender identity or expression, sex, sexual orientation, marital or familial status, domestic partner status, veteran or military status, genetic predisposition or carrier status, and prior criminal convictions, as well as educational attainment.)
