The 67th Flaherty Film Seminar Fellowships

Colgate University & Online
June 24 - July 1, 2022

2022 Flaherty Fellowship are now closed.

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIPS

Each year the Flaherty offers emerging and mid-career filmmakers, media professionals and students Fellowships to attend the Flaherty Film Seminar. The Fellowship program is an expanded experience of the seminar, led by Fellows Coordinators and designed to further your knowledge of cinema through participation in an array of unique activities. If you are Indigenous to the land you call home, or have been historically dispossessed from your land, history, culture, and power, we especially invite you to apply to one of our Fellowships.

For the first time, in 2022 The Flaherty Seminar will welcome two Fellowship cohorts:

  • 25-30 Fellows will meet in-person at Colgate University;

  • 25-30 Fellows from around the world will gather in a unique virtual space.

Both programs will include access to screenings, discussions, master classes, Fellows screenings, meetups, and opportunities to self-organize.

Both cohorts will begin on Friday June 24th, a day before the wider Seminar, to learn about the history of the Seminar, take part in a master class and a curatorial workshop, discuss pre-assigned readings relating to the theme, and watch and discuss clips of each other’s films, by way of a Fellows’ film screening. Besides interacting with the group at large, Flaherty Fellows in person and online will also take part in private meetings and discussions with the featured artists and other special guests in attendance.

Fellowship awardees are required to assist with various assignments during the Seminar and virtual experience. These include assistance with administrative tasks, hospitality, note taking, or audio recording during Seminar discussions. These tasks will be kept to a minimum so as not to interfere with your participation in the Seminar. At the end of the program, all Fellowship awardees are required to submit a final report about their experience.

All Fellows will come out of the program with creative inspiration, experiences and connections, which will aid them in furthering their own careers and artistic endeavors.

ELIGIBILITY/CRITERIA

We search for applicants who have demonstrated achievement in their profession or field of study, or who show potential to be an emerging talent. In the application form, applicants should effectively convey reasons why they would like to participate in the Seminar and also how they feel they can contribute to the event.

In order to receive a Fellowship, you must be available from Friday, June 24, 2022 until the end of the Seminar on Friday, July 1, 2022 at noon ET

  • Applicants for the in-person Fellowship must be present on campus at Colgate University for the duration of this time.

  • Applicants for the virtual Fellowship must be available to meet for a few hours a day (roughly 12pm-4pm ET) from Friday, June 24, 2022 through Friday, July 1, 2022.

Applicants are no longer required to submit reference letters, but instead are asked to submit the names and emails of two references.

If you have received a Fellowship to attend the Seminar in the past, you are ineligible to apply (exception applies to the Philadelphia Fellowships). Students are only eligible if they are currently enrolled at Duke University or are Philadelphia-based.

The spots for each Fellowship cohort are limited and not guaranteed. By applying for a Fellowship you do not need to fill in the Seminar Registration form.

If you do not receive a Fellowship but you still wish to attend the Seminar in-person there will be limited space available on a first come first served basis.

All Fellowship applicants will be offered an opportunity to register for the in-person seminar before registration closes on June 1st.

COSTS

If you receive a Fellowship – be it in-person or online – the entirety of your registration fee will be covered*. For the in-person Fellows this includes lodging, meals, screenings, and other special events throughout the Seminar week but DOES NOT include travel.

*with the exception of the Professional Development Fellowship, for which $1500 is covered.
