2024 Seminar FAQs
What to expect at the Flaherty Seminar
The Seminar is a shared experience bridging diverse and often divergent cultural spheres with an immersive week of appreciation, engagement, and discussion exploring the potential of non-fiction cinema and its impact on our world.
The Seminar is an exploratory process, which emulates the concept of non-preconception. To this end, we do not announce the Seminar program beforehand - no one knows what they will be watching until the lights go down in the cinema. Film notes and trigger warnings will be made available to participants before each screening begins. The Seminar is programmed as a continuum where program sessions relate to, riff off of, and expand on one another.
The 2024 Flaherty Seminar programming begins on the afternoon of Thursday, June 27 and concludes on the night of Tuesday, July 2nd*. Seminar Check In will be open at the Thai Film Archive all day Thursday, June 27th, from morning through the evening. The opening program begins Thursday afternoon at approximately 4pm and the final Seminar program is Tuesday, July 2nd in the evening, followed by a closing night banquet. The seminar schedule is intense, with 2-3 screenings and discussions each day (over 10 separate programs with more than 30 films in total) with breaks and meals. Seminar artists, fellows, and general participants take part in the program collectively at the Thai Film Archives in Salaya and are engaged in daily screenings, active discussions, shared meals, and social events.
*Please note that the Fellowship program begins a day earlier, on June 26th.
Registration Rates
This year, The Flaherty is offering tiered ticket pricing to accommodate both US and non-US based participants to Thailand. The Non-U.S./Canada participant rates were developed in collaboration with the international program team from Europe and Asia for this year to ensure the Seminar was within reach for participants in a wide range of regions. This year’s U.S/Canada rates, which are significantly lower than previous years, also takes into consideration the additional cost of travel and accommodations that participants will need to incur.
Tickets for local attendees in Thailand will be priced and sold separately by the Thai Film Archive.
This year's seminar registration fee includes daily screenings, discussions and artist conversations; Daily snacks, coffee, and lunch during the seminar, evening seminar events and access to the films online during and following the seminar.
The registration fee does NOT include travel to and from Thailand, housing in Thailand or daily breakfast. Visit the Hotel and Travel page with information to choose and book your accommodations when you complete registration. Your registration confirmation email will include this link as well.
We encourage you to allocate some additional funds for local transportation and meals not covered by the Seminar (full breakfast, dinners on some evenings), especially if you are interested in exploring the area.
