Map of a New World - Films From the Flaherty Film Seminar at Tacoma Film Festival (Tacoma, WA) . Six animated and documentary films taken from various editions of the Flaherty Film Seminar. The filmmakers include David Ehrlich (1988 Seminar), Rox Lee(2019 Seminar), Shambhavi Kaul (2019 Seminar), Lourdes Portillo (1992 Seminar),Ben Rivers (2012 Seminar) and Cauleen Smith (1992 & 2018 Seminars). The s creening will be held on October 5.
LET THE CHURCH SAY AMEN! (Director St. Claire Bourne, 1973 Seminar) co-presentation with Tisch School of the Arts, NYU Cinema Studies and NYU Department of Religious Studies on November 15. This seminal documentary by African-American filmmaker St. Claire Bourne follows a seminary student traveling through different communities to determine where to work after graduation.

2020 Flaherty Seminar Programmer
The Flaherty is excited to announce that researcher and film curator from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Janaína Oliveira will be the 2020 Flaherty Seminar Programmer.
Researcher and film curator, Janaína Oliveira holds a Ph.D. in History, professor at the IFRJ (Federal Institute of Rio de Janeiro) and Fulbright Scholar at the Center for African Studies at Howard University in Washington D.C. She is currently head programmer of the Encontro de Cinema Negro Zózimo Bulbul (Black Cinema Festival Zózimo Bulbul / Brazil) and FINCAR (International Festival of Filmmakers / Brazil). She is also a advisor for African and the Black Diaspora films for the International Festival of Locarno (Switzerland) and part of APAN (Association of Black Audiovisual Professionals). Founder and coordinator of FICINE, the Black Cinema Itinerant Forum ( www.ficine.org).
Flaherty Fellows
Mitch McCabe (Flaherty Fellow 2018) received the 2019 Sarah Jacobson Film Award for her project Civil War Surveillance Poems. Part 1 of the project will be screening at Denver Film Festival on November 2 & 3. In addition, Civil War Surveillance Poems (Part 1) will screen at Rockaway Film Festival on October 19 in a shorts program curated by 2018 Flaherty Fellow and Flaherty NYC programer Dessane Lopez Cassell .
Ben Mendelsohn (Flaherty Fellow 2019) will premiere his new essay film, As If Sand Were Stone: Underwater Dredging and the Making of Urban Coasts , at the Rockaway Film Festiva l on October 20 . The film combines observational footage of New York’s harbor deepening project with self-reflexive research spirals about earth moving, highlighting the intersections of digital and sedimentary landscapes.
Tamer Hassan (Flaherty Fellow 2014) and Armand Yervant Tufenkian will screen Accession , their film that traces a collection of letters to the homes where each was sent or received in this uniquely process-based documentary. The letters, written to accompany seed packets sent between friends and families and dated as far back as 1806, are read aloud by individual narrators, unfolding as personal-poetic reflections on life and labor in rural America. Via a variety of 16mm film stocks, Accession maps a visual and aural correspondence between anonymous people and places with an exploratory flair at this year's Viennale, October 24 - November 6.
Eunhye "Hong" Kim's (Flaherty Fellow 2016) latest short film, Mother, Flower will have its premiere at the 17th Asiana International Short Film Festival ( Seoul, South Korea) . The film captures the subtle emotional status of new mother and her experience during postpartum depression. October 31 - November 5
CONGRATULATIONS! Tiona Nekkia McClodden (Flaherty Fellow 2015) is the recipient of the 2019 Bucksbaum Award . McClodden was chosen from among the seventy-five artists whose works are being presented in the 2019 Whitney Biennial . In her interdisciplinary practice, McClodden utilizes documentary film, experimental video, sculpture, and sound installation to explore the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality.
Flaherty Filmmakers
Jeanne C. Finley (Flaherty Filmmaker 2009) presents Journeys Beyond the Cosmodrome. This hybrid doc/nonfiction follows nine teens as they prepare to graduate from Kazakshtan’s Akkol Orphanage. Rockets launched overhead from the nearby Cosmodrome alluding to their aspiring dreams as they write about and perform their imagined future-selves. Screenings will be held at Mill Valley Film Festival on October 5,Berkeley Pacific Film Archive on October 9 and Wexner Center on November 3.
Toronto International Film Festival and the University of Toronto present Triple Consciousness Films by Akosua Adoma Owusu (Flaherty Filmmaker 2019) followed by a conversation with scholar Lauren Cramer. A retrospective of short films by Ghanaian-American filmmaker Akosua Adoma Owusu highlights the “triple consciousness” that Owusu explores throughout her intimate, immersive, playful, and at times shocking filmography. This concept reflects the collision of identities and diverse worlds experienced by African immigrants in the United States. Screens October 7
MYÜZ Presents JEZEBEL by Numa Perrier (Flaherty NYC Filmmaker 2018). MYÜZ presents the New York City premiere of JEZEBEL (2019), by filmmaker Numa Perrier at The Maysles Documentary Center in Harlem on October 15 . The screening will be followed by an intimate discussion with Numa, led by curator, writer, and film programmer Dessane Lopez Cassell (2018 Flaherty NYC Programmer). Reception immediately following.
Museo Reina Sofía presents The Keys to the Kingdom by Hassan Khan (Flaherty Seminar 2015) takes present-day tumultuous populism and its intriguing method of tapping into the grotesque as a starting point. The exhibition includes an algorithmic hip-hop song, illustrated flags, a CGI mural and other forms on the spectrum between the romantic and vulgar, the sublime and grotesque. Keys to the Kingdom will be exhibited at the Palacio de Cristal in Parque del Retiro (Madrid, Spain) from October 17 - March 1 2020.

The8fest seeks your 8mm, Super 8, 9.5mm or other small gauge film projects (such as loops and installations) for our 2020 festival being held January 24 - 26 (Toronto, Canada). They encourage first time filmmakers, experimental artists, established filmmakers, and everyone who has an interest in small gauge film to apply to their Open Call for Submissions ! A unique Toronto-based film festival that presents all forms of small-gauge film: 8mm, Super 8 and 9.5mm, as well as works in installation, loops, personal, handmade, experimental, animations, diaries, essays, collage, cut-ups, performance/film, music/film and ‘proto-cinema devices’ like zoetropes. The 33rd Images Festival welcomes you to submit moving image works towards its ON SCREEN programs. Established in 1987, IMAGES FESTIVAL i s the longest running and most influential moving image festival in Canada. Our ON SCREEN program is an annual survey dedicated to contemporary artist’s film and video presented in a cinema context and to moving image in all its forms.
